Juan Castillo at the Austin Statesman just published an article on Austin’s newest plan to re-vamp the east Austin corridor along East Riverside Drive. The concept is to take the crumbling corridor and bring it up to speed…make the rest of Austin proud. East Riverside has so much potential from a location perspective: it’s closer to the F1 track, it has it’s own section of Lake Austin that could be every bit as popular as Lady Bird Lake and it’s directly in between the airport and downtown. I can easily envision a boulevard-style tree lined East Riverside with boutique hotels, shops and restaurants that out-hip even South Congress….but first will need to bring in a couple bull-dozers.
Already this East Austin area is popular from a real estate perspective because it is far less expensive (than south Austin) and just as close to downtown Austin. We can expect to see that trend boom over the next decade, with areas like “Travis Heights East” becoming more and more popular (I did not make up that neighborhood name!).
